| Camping - What to bring? | ||
| Jul 14 2008 14:33 | ||
I am going on a two-day camping trip in a couple of weeks with some co-workers. Someone else is in charge of buying all the food and I want to bring along some healthy options for myself. I plan on taking some protein bars, fruits and veggies that don't require refrigeration, maybe some beef jerky (low sodium) and some light bread and peanut butter. Any other suggestions for filling snacks or meal replacements I can bring along? I will have access to a small (7 quart) personal cooler. Thanks :) |

raw veggies.... cucumbers, carrots, celery for your peanut butter. if you find someone with fresh veggies they wont need to be chilled.... unless you like them better cold... oatmeal for breakfast just remember to take a small pan. |

| Stuff that you can cook with minimal effort, cleanup and water works best for backpacking, if that's what you're doing. Freeze dry is expensive but it works. Anything instant and light - packets of grits, oatmeal, cocoa, raisins and instant rice are very useful. If you're going to be really active, this is a chance to get some benefit from high GI foods - stuff you can eat that gives you energy right away. | ||

The items that keep me from pigging out while camping are: individual yogurt containers (with some granola & nuts to add to it) and instant oatmeal packets for breakfast), veggie hot dogs, Good Earth veggie crisps, a bag of mini carrots (for when I get the munchies... instead of turning to potato chips!), seasoned sunflower seeds in the shell (they take more time to eat... I spit out the shell and sometimes, I don't even eat the seed!) lots of bottled water and lots of cold, clean fruit (apples and pears... bananas attract mosquitos!) |

I never knew bananas attracted mosquitos! That's a great tip. |

| I also heard they're attracted to the colour blue. | ||

It's only a two-day trip so don't get carried away, especially if it's a carrying-things-on-your-back trip. Keep it simple. Trail mix is good, granola is good, vegetables and fruit are good. If it was me I think I'd take along a big baggie of Fiber One 'trail mix' for breakfast and to nibble on if I got hungry, mostly to make sure that I was getting enough fiber, and just eat whatever everyone else is for your main meal of the day to make it more of a group experience. Or else take along enough of something healthy (like a veggie platter) for everyone to share at dinner time so you're all eating the same thing. Two days isn't enough to destroy any diet, and I think it's important to fit into the group rather than just doing your own thing (unless everyone's taking care of themselves!) |
