Ack, I love this stuff.  But I noticed that a tablespoon of it is so many calories!  Like today I downed about 400-500 calories of the stuff.  How do i avoid them at buffets?  They're just asking to be eaten by me! XD

Maybe you could research how they produce it.  That could cause you to lose your appetite for it altogether.

Personally I wouldn't be able to live with myself eating that, but to each their own. my parents love it. Honestly, I wouldn't eat it at all, especially if you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I'm sure once in a while as a treat wouldn't be terrible, but its pure fat and not easy on your digestive tract. Consumption of fois gras is linked to a number of diseases and it would be best to avoid it.

I second what betsyann said... check out this website for some great faux gras/pate recipes that are cruelty free

http://www.nofoiegras.org/faux_gras.htm

I had a rough idea of what it was but after I looked it up on Wiki... I can't think of a less appetizing food (minus hot dogs).
Sorry, I think that forcefully fattened liver is destined to be high calorie.

Thank you for being respectful discussing what can be considered a controversial / emotional food topic.

yea. i would watch a video about it. you shouldn't want to eat it after that.

you really really need to watch that.

You must go to some fancy buffets that you're faced with too much foie gras! :-)  The production methods are pretty alarming but then so are the battery eggs that go in a lot of products.  Treat yourself to foie gras once in a while as a treat and leave it alone the rest of the time.

How in the world does foie gras get into a discussion of health foods? This is duck butter, and will do the same thing for you as real butter. Spread thinly when using.

And to reduce the temptation to eat a lot more, always avoid eating it with a cold glass of sauterne and a basket of freshly toasted bread crusts, while sitting in the sun in the afternoon in Sarlat.
I LOVE FOIE GRAS!!

but hey im french, so a xmas without foie gras is not a xmas. Well that is our family's way.. we always had small toasts with foie gras and if you put a bit of figue marmalade or jam.. yummmy

I dont even want to know how many caloeries are in it... i have a can of foie gras that was brought to me by my mom when she came to visit cambodia... oh.. i'm saving it for xmas 2008...

i don't care whose culture it is, it's disgusting. and i am really disgusted with anyone who could claim that they know how it's made and be okay with it. force feeding animals until their liver become unnaturally fat and then killing them for it. that's really messed up.

it's terrible for you (pure fat) and it's terrible for the ducks. not just the ones that forced to eat but the hundreds and hundreds of females that get thrown into trash bags because they don't have a good enough liver for us to want to consume it.

there really is no excuse for defending this. go get some f-ing margarine.

Excuse me whenifly, but maybe you should go over and post your views on the veg strings.

If no one ate foie gras there would be no ducks and if no one drank milk there would be no cows.  They weren't domesticated to be your pets.

I suggest you read Francis Parkman's The Oregon Trail.  In it you will see a revolting western culture which kills enormous buffalo simply because they are ugly.  But you will also see a picture of plains Amerind culture which was entirely dependent on meat-eating.  Are you critical of that culture too?
Ha, I want to hear more about the culture that was entirely dependent on fatty diseased duck liver.

Seriously, though, the OP wanted a way to keep from eating the stuff.  If the fact that it's full of calories isn't enough, then maybe knowledge of how the stuff is produced could be helpful.

ok  when i fly...

no matter what you think there is no right and wrong,  its based on opinion

it is part of the french culture to eat foie gras.. like mcdonalds is in the US (and trust me the way they treat the animals that go into a burger or mcchicken sandwhich isn't any better)

anyway back to the point..im not saying that you dont have the right to state your opinion.. you do

but NO ONE asked you to be rude, judging, or insulting

Hey all of you,

I am really sorry if i have offended people, but hey what can i say, Yes i like foie gras and im sorry if its from the french culture (then wondering why france is known for its food... hum....because its real food) anyway, i know how they are made but as others have said there are plenty of other stuf you put in your plate that are treated as nice as the ducks but you just dont know about it...

I could have been more rude in my post if i actually wanted to say what i thought of other cultures... where they dont mistreat animals but humans mistreat themselves...  what do you think all the fast food companies are doing to humans eheheh and the thing is humans dont even need a tube put down their throats to be fed fat they do by themselves...

Anyway, foie gras is part of our culture, and yes it is full of fat but arent all good things unhealthy...

There is one restaurant here in Siem reap cambodia and they do foie gras on sweet mango... its really yummy, the combination is great..

And i am proud to say im ok with my french culture

OP,,

I'd say just eat it in moderation. I'm not a huge fan of the stuff taste-wise, but just try to have a little bit if you crave it. I have a hard time with french food, it must be this damned Italian background. It must be hard for someone who is a fan of it, you know, kind of like reaching into a potato chip bag and reaching in again...and again. Tongue out Or padding the butter on a blueberry muffin... .. HUNGRY NOW.

whenifly,

This is about alternatives and moderation relating to Foie Gras, not a discussion on the ethical treatment of ducks. The OP obviously doesn't really care, and enjoys their heritage.

I hate to break it to you, but just because you find something disgusting doesn't make you the representative of absolute truth, your opinion is entirely subjective. Some of us actually like to eat things that used to have a heart beat, so there's my subjective 2 cents on the matter.

How is the production of foie gras worse than the production of any other meat that people eat?

A matter of relativity, I guess.  Personally, the thought of eating something that's had a big tube shoved up its ass and pumped full of cornmeal seems much more unpleasant than eating something that walked around in its own poo for months before having its throat cut.

... which I guess is why I stay away from both.

We can start a meat production thread if you'd like.  I'd open it up with the "Earthlings" video.

are you really implying that if humans didn't force fed ducks and kill them to eat their fattened liver there would be no ducks around? because that is ridiculous. and if we didn't drink milk from cows they just would no longer even exist because the only purpose they serve is to fulfill the desires of humans?

and are you really comparing a culture that lived in a time where they depended on the buffalo for survival and the gross forcible enlargening of duck liver so that we can have something terrible for us to spred on some bread at a fancy restaurant?

really, try to think a little.
and really i don't care it i come off rude.
to not care if something was tortured for your personal gain is rude.

i can't believe that you just stated that "there is no right or wrong, it's based on opinion". that's crazy. there is obviously a right and a wrong. torturing things that have nerves to feel pain for the personal gain is WRONG.

the holocaust was wrong. slavery was wrong. sexism is wrong. torturing animals so you can clog your veins is wrong.

it would be different if we needed to eat fattened duck liver to survive, but we don't. no one does.

as i stated before, i don't care if i come off as rude. the fact is that torturing something to produce a product that isn't needed for survival is rude.
