Quick lifting question. mortalmonkey
  Jul 08 2008 22:02
I did a few hundred push ups 2 days ago. I want to do chest workouts today, but my chest still feels tense from all those push ups a few days ago.
Should I do chest today or should I wait?

I think the better question is why would you do a few hundred push ups? Certainly not for strength training or toning.

I think an even better question is why are you doing a body-part specific workout?

but to answer your actual question, it really depends on how sore you are.

I did this while jogging a few days ago. I got bored just jogging so I started doing 10 push ups at the end of every other block.

Geez jogging and pushups?  You are getting in shape!  And I just looked at your latest pics.  You are also getting thin.  You are doing great!

Hey, sometimes you do things just to see if you can - last year I did 430 pushups in a day following the Pavel's Ladder format.

Took me half a week to recover though so it's not a stunt I care to repeat any time soon :)

yup. took a few days to get over a fast-as-you-ca-century-set of curls. lol.

depends on what you mean by tense. if you mean you can barely breathe due to DOMS, then take another day or two. if you mean barely tender, maybe give it a little whirl. only you can really judge how torn those muscles are.

How are pushups a "body-part specific" workout? Do pushups not work several muscle groups at once? I'm not 100% sure on this, but I do believe that they work your arms, back, chest and abdominals if done correctly? I don't know, I just always thought that they were more than a "body-part specific" workout...?

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but that's just what I've been told.

I think (he'll correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure) that Sully was refering to the OP's statement that he was going to do "chest workouts" today - Sully (as well as New Rules of Lifting and others) routinely recommends not doing "leg workouts" vs "chest workouts" vs "back workouts", but focusing on push vs pull and horiz vs vert, along with squats, deadlifts, and lunges.

I decided not to do chest yesterday. This was a good choice I think, 'cause my chest still feels tense. :o

Oh, lol okay that makes much more sense. :)

This is typical overdoing it. You should never work any body part so hard that it takes more than 2 days to recover. The main reason is that you drastically increase the chance of injury. The second reason is that it's a terribly ineffective and inefficient way to get in shape or exercise a given muscle group.

You should work on stretching. I usually get pretty tight chest muscles for a day or so after a chest workout, but stretching helps recover faster since it directs more blood to the area.
