Warning: Kind of gross! Problems with #2... madetoshine
  Jul 08 2008 03:55

I'm posting this in the vegetarian forum since I don't eat meat, except fish, a few times a month....mods can feel free to move this if they want to!

I've been a pescetarian for months now, and I try and only eat fish a few times a month. Lately I have periods where it'll be days before I can have a umm...movement...and in the meantime, I get EXTREMELY bloated! It's disgusting! It gets to the point where my pants won't fit me right. To give you an idea of what I eat, here's what I had yesterday and today:

YESTERDAY:

"Breakfast" (it was late): Kashi GoLean Crunch, dry

Went to the gym for a few hours...

Snack: Watermelon and cantaloupe - about 2 cups

Dinner: Went crazy...had snow crab legs (only about 2-3), a salad with balsamic vinaigrette, lobster ravioli with a cream crab sauce, and for dessert I had an espresso and a warm apple tart.  A rare dinner, but I enjoyed it.

TODAY: (much more low-key, hehe...)

Breakfast: Kashi GoLean Crunch, dry

Snack: 1 pint of grape tomatoes

Lunch: Boca Vegan Burger w/ veggie american cheese, Planters Daybreaks Blend Berry Almond Mix
Snack: Oikos 0% Greek Yogurt - vanilla, with 2 tbs ground flaxseed

(Did 1 hour of cardio)

Dinner: Barilla Plus whole wheat spaghetti with 1/4 package of tempeh, ground, and Barilla spicy tomato sauce

Dessert: 3 crackers with better'n peanut butter, some baby carrots

This is kind of how I eat all the time, so I don't get it! Why isn't this stuff leaving my body?!

Is there anything I can do, besides take a laxative, to help this? What foods are good to eat in a situation like this? I know high fiber stuff helps, but I think my diet has plenty of fiber. Should I just get some coffee in the morning and hope it does the trick?? I feel crampy and awful. :( I'm sorry this is gross but it's been driving me crazy! I used to poo like 2 times a day when I ate meat.

Oh and in case it helps: I'm 5'3"ish, ~120lbs or so, and I drink PLENTY of water -- at least 60oz a day.

Sometimes when I eat a really good diet for a good long time without fail, I get really bloated and constipated, and I can't really answer why that happens!  I will say that drinking some tea first thing in the morning really helps, and I must say coffee is even better to get things going.  Sometimes waiting to eat helps me in the morning; I just drink some tea and eat after I have "gone".  Try different things and if that doesn't help, try some probiotics with your meals and other holisitic products.  Also, try some lemon in your water.  I keep a little thing of lemon juice at work to squeeze in my cup about two times a day.

Good luck and hopefully this helps!

I know how frustrated you are!  When I'm at college I sometimes get like this.  I find that the best thing for me is coffee and running and/or walking.  If it goes over 48 hours, because I am obsessed with regularity in that department, I will start my next morning with a liter of water, run, coffee & oatmeal for breakfast, and that usually does the trick.  Drink lots of water (which I see you do) and minimal soda all day.

If not, and you still want to make yourself go but without a laxative, I would actually recommend prune juice.  When I was in highschool and interned in a hospital, one of the doctors recommended it over laxatives EVERY time.

Also, an interesting side note - SugarFree Jelly Belly beans have a disclaimer that they may have a laxative effect - they have an unexpectedly huge amount of fiber in them.  Try them!

Good luck!

when i switched from pescatarian to mainly vegan i had trouble pooping daily.  i tried probiotics, enemas, laxatives on occassion but was afraid of messing up my system.

i have FINALLY gone back to having a nice big regular morning poo.

all though everyone is always pushing "fiber" i finally started plugging in all my daily intake, calories, ect...and i found out i was getting around 200% of my reccomended fiber.  i was also only getting about 10% of my daily calories from FAT.  i get more daily PROTEIN from vegetables and grains (without trying to even "substitute" meat with tofu, beans ect) than i was getting FATS.  the only way i found worked for fixing my bowel movements was to make sure i was getting at LEAST 20%+ of my daily calories from fat.  i'm usually around 20-25%.

i want to shout from the hills because i'm so darn relieved. all you "clean" eaters out there, get enough healthy dietary FATS!!!

Thanks for the advice, everyone!!  I guess I need to not avoid fat like the plague, although it says I was around 24% fat yesterday.  I think I'll have a tbsp of regular ol' fatty peanut butter a day or something like that...hopefully it will help!  For now, a medium coffee from Dunkin' Donuts has mostly done the trick. :-P

Maybe you could try eating some vegetables.  For a mainly vegetarian diet it seems like you are mostly focusing on grains, fruits, and fake meats, with very little in the way of actual vegetables.  These would help you get more fiber in your diet which may help with your problem.

I thought an entire pint of grape tomatoes and a bunch of baby carrots was sufficient but I guess it's really not.  I will try and add more veggies to my diet.   Thanks!

What fuzzys said.

You may not be getting enough fiber.   Ramp up the fruits and veggies.   I'm VERY regular and here's what I ate today - a typical day (I'm a 170 lb guy.)

Breakfast: 1/2 cup steelcut oatmeal, banana, berries, 1/2 cantalope.

Snack: handful of raw almonds

Lunch: large salad; romaine, spinach, tomatoes, carrots, walnuts, olives, peppers, italian dressing. 1/2 sandwich - hummus on whole grain bread.  Grapefruit.

Dinner: chinese veggie stir fry with rice and a couple glasses of red wine.

If all else fails, alternate between coffee and water till ya go.

I had a similar problem till  I found a miracle recipe on a diet site.

You will need:

water (cold, warm or hot, it's up to your taste) - 2 cups,

linseed (I bought a 1kg bag in a health shop for about £2)  - 1 tsp,

lemon.

First thing in the morning  drink 1 cup of water with squeezed lemon juice. Then eat one tea spoon of seeds (you can either swallow the seeds or chew, they are quite nice actually), then drink the second glass of water.  Then have breakfast. You will see the result in about an hour.

You can read about how it works here:

http://www.herbsforhealthyliving.co.uk/commonly_used_herbs/l inseed.html

I've been practicing this for just over a month and have healthy poo twice a day!

I would reccommend more fruits and veggies earlier in the day.  In fact, I would recommend you have your snack of fruit before or with breakfast and then have a midmorning snack of a raw vegetable.

I don't know how regularly you eat Kashi GoLean Crunch for breakfast, but I know that the one time that I tried it, both my boyfriend and I had similar digestive issues when we were eating it (cramping, bloating, etc). As soon as I switched to a different brand of cereal, those problems went away.

I don't know if that's what's causing your problem, but if you've been eating that consistently while having those symptoms, you might want to try switching cereal brands.

I don't know how much fiber you eat, but if you start eating a lot make sure to drink a lot of water! :)

I have terrible problems if I eat Grape Nuts cereal.  Too bulky.  You really need to stick to one serving and make sure you have enough liquid to help move things along.

You may also have a case of gas on top of everything else.

Colace, over the counter, is a stool softener.  Give that a try.  It's not a laxative, so it will not make you uncomfortable.

Good luck.

I have to say there is something about the Kashi Go Lean Crunch that stops me up severely.  So much so, that I had to go to the gastroenterologist, because I was so blocked up.  The stuff you take for a colonoscopy cleared it all out, but I really think that my body just has trouble digesting that cereal.  I also have similar troubles a few months into eating the Zone bars and the other Kashi bars, so it may be that I have trouble digesting specific grains (there are 7 I think in Kashi).

It may be that you need to avoid the Kashi cereal for a while, or at least only have it on rare occasions.

Thanks for the advice on Kashi!  It is indeed pretty much the only cereal I eat...although I did buy Fiber One original to help fill me up in the mornings.

I think part of the problem may be the whey protein shakes I've started drinking more regularly...

If you haven't tried probiotics, try that. Also try digestive enzymes from a good, reliable brand.

I kinda have the same problem...been 50% raw for the week, and 80% for the past 2 days...anyhow number 2 has not come at all :( That is why Ive been adding metamucil to my smoothies with no avail...Im losing weight and all...but its just weird

#18 nevarren Jul 27 2008 04:17

I have the same diet as you - pescatarian - and I also eat Kashi GoLean! regularly.  I used to have digestive problems like what you're describing, and the single biggest thing that helped me was drinking water.  Lots and lots of water, especially first thing in the morning.  I tend to get very dried out at night, and always have, and I've found a direct correlation between how dried out I feel and whether I experience, uh, movement.  8 glasses isn't always enough for me, and again, it's especially important in the morning.  I try to get in 3 glasses of water in the morning.

Good luck!
