So, here's the story: I've been good the entire long weekend. Kept it under 1500 cals and yesterday went for a 2-hour hike in the mountains in the morning and did 1.5 hours of rollerblading in the evening.
So, all proud of myself, jumped on the scale this morning... only to discover that I am 3 pounds heavier.
I do not think it is possible to gain muscle in that short of a time period. Does not seem like water retention either since I did not eat anything out of the ordinary.
Has this ever happened to you? What could it be?
Must be something in the air... I am still clueless and still heavier :(
you may not have built muscle, but you could be retaining water in your muscles from overuse. Or it could just be a fluke. who knows. But that did happen to me after a tough 6 mile hike one day.
I feel for you, but the gain is almost certainly temporary. Just as it's impossible to lose 3 pounds overnight, it is also impossible to gain 3, true, fat-filled pounds in that amount of time. You're probably just retaining water...did you stretch enough after, drink enough water before & after (in general, really), have something super salty? I say keep the water coming, as it'll flush out your system and wait another 7 days to hop on the scale. I can drive myself nuts, wanting to weigh myself every day, so I try to stick to weekly weigh-ins. Good luck!
I am so glad to hear you wrote about retaining water. It seems a lot of people don't realize how much weight they can gain just from that. A womans weight can change sometimes up to 5lbs up or down each day because of it. And I think people really aren't aware of how much sodium is in everything we eat.
I frequently show a gain after a workout that is different from or more than usual. It's water in the muscles, definitely. It will flush out and once you are used to the activities, your body won't respond that way to routine exercise.
My first outdoor soccer game of the season, I burned 966 cals (played goalie for 20 minutes of that 90 minute game, too!). My scale was UP 2 lbs the next day, but I knew it would be. By the 3rd week of the outdoor season, the gain quit showing up.
Hang in there and keep drinking that water. You'll see the benefits of your busy weekend by next weekend!
Usually when something like that is happening it's water retention. Were you consuming more sodium than you typically do? I almost always do when I'm not eating at home. Just this last weekend I picked up about 3 lbs of water and two days of eating at home again (especially bananas), I'm back to normal.
Oh my goodness the same thing happened to me!!! I have been pretty bummed about it until I saw this forum, hooray!
Here's my weekend, I think this may explain why my muscles are retaining water:
Thursday night: Left work and drove to Norfolk with the hubby and walked all over the city until our shins ached. SO much fun though.
Friday: Went to Virginia Beach and surfed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. pretty much non-stop. Then went to Williamsburg for fireworks where we had to hike about a mile to get to the site. Drank a lot of water to keep hydrated in that hot sun.
Saturday: Got up and ran for about 30 minutes, then went to a 5 year old's birthday party with 15 other little kids who needed chasing, help, someone to throw the bowling ball, put on their shoes, run after them, etc. Drank a lot of water.
Sunday: Rested. (And ate over my calorie limit unfortunately).
Monday: Got on the scale, I gained 2-3 pounds. That sucks. Glad to know I'm not alone and going crazy.

I typically get at least 64oz of water a day, so I would not think it would be water retention... But here's an update: Did 2 hours of intense roller blading yesterday. Weighed in this morning, 2.5 lbs heavier... I do feel that it is not that I am getting fat from sport. But it is uncomfy... I should probably listen to tattooed_kitty and weight in in a couple of days... But I get motivated by results, otherwise it is really difficult :(
This weight gain never happens when I do yoga (but that may be beacause I do bikram, the hot yoga). To all to whom this happened, what kind of exercise triggered?
Muscle weighs much more than fat. If you are exercising and drinking water, you will see a big change soon. Don't give up!
This happened to me this past weekend too. I added some new workouts and also had foods high in sodium this weekend. I was showing 5 pounds over. Started drinking tons of water and my weight is back to normal after a few days. Just give it a few days.
