I am terrible at eyeballing measurements, so I was wondering how much of a condiment you were putting on something if you used a moderate pressure on a squeeze bottle and waved back and forth three times for a width of about 5 inches.
What gi-jane said. There is just no way to even reliably guess at this. You have to take into consideration the size of the squeeze bottle spout (how big) and the thickness and/or consistency of the item being squeezed. The temperature of it at the time of squeezing will also affect how quickly it comes out and/or how much. My "moderate" squeezing pressure might also calibrate much differently than yours. ;-) Get a measuring spoon and squeeze an amount into it. Drizzle this onto your food and eyeball that to guesstimate "squeeze" calories next time.
I am sure a totally cheapo (and totally adequate) set of measuring spoons could be purchased at most any dollar store. Outside of that, I believe a standard regular-size silverware spoon (the normal eating size one, not the large one, not the long one called "teaspoon"), level full but not heaping, is about 1-1/2 teaspoons. I am not positive on this, and I am going to check to verify it. If anyone knows if I am way off, please feel free to correct me. If not, you could use that for an estimate, if you don't have measuring spoons available. You just have to measure things and then view that portion size at least once to get an accurate "eyeball" for next time.
i was surprised the first time i did it without measuring that i typically used less than a tablespoon of ketchup on my turkey burgers. i mean, after you've seen how much it is a few times, it's pretty easy to tell whether it's the same amount (i tend to do this a lot at home even when i have access to measuring spoons, just because i don't think it's necessary to dirty utencils...trying to save water, y'know, lol)
Well, the fact is, when I go to subway's and I ask for some olive oil, they just squeeze it from their bottle a few times...I'm not too sure if they have teaspoons or tablespoons readily on hand ^^; But I do want to make sure that I know how much I'm getting since a teaspoon and a tablespoon difference is almost 100 calories. =]
Yeah, in that case, it's tough. I still think it's a good idea to do your own measurement/portion experiments just for your own benefit. But, in a case like that, I don't know what else you can do other than ask them to add a very light amount or only 1 squeeze. This is what I do, particularly with the vinegar. I love the flavor, but not a dripping wet sandwich. Room temp. oil comes out of those squeeze bottles really fast, especially if the squeezer has a heavy hand with it. A teaspoon is not a lot at all, and I would almost guarantee a tablespoon to be closer to the mark in that situation, unless you specifically request a very light amount or 1 pretty light squeeze only. Since they bundle your sandwich up for you, you can't really check it later, either. And if you're a short person (like myself), you can't always see how much they put on, either. I know it sounds weird, but if you ask for a very small amount, you can sort of lift your sandwich top up and spread it around a little bit onto your bottom half toppings, or just kind of slide it all around, to make a little bit go further. Oil spreads easily. I'd still probably count at least 1-1/2 tsp to 2 tsp, if not a whole tablespoon, in that situation, unless you specifically request extra light, or just only splurge on the oil once in awhile if you have enough cals. I've never been to a Subway where they weren't willing to accommodate portion requests, though, if you ask and are nice about it.
They will give the oil to you on the side if you want to put in on yourself, too.

Oooh, how do they do that?
Usually if you look by the fountain pop by the straws and lids and stuff there should be little packets of light mayo, yellow mustard, and oil. I always use the light mayo packs at the Subway I go to. If theyre not sitting out you can always ask the cashier for one.
Oh, awesome, I will look for them next time. Today when I went in and asked for oil on the side of my sandwich by putting it in a little container, they said they didn't have any...any other way of getting it on the side?

They have little plastic containers with lids, or at least when I worked at Subway when I was 16 they did. I think they still do.

Sorry, I didn't read this first. I guess they don't anymore... ![]()
