Eating before exercise...weight loss myth? cathipa
  Jul 07 2008 15:11

I have heard that if you eat before you exercise you will lose weight faster?  Any truth to this??

That one isn't a myth.  Something to do with metabolism I think... eating raises the metabolism and so does exercise.    However, if you eat a lot before you exercise you can give yourself very unpleasant stomach-aches.  A light snack is fine.

Depends. Sports nutrition is a terribly complex field but for most weight loss or casual exercisers it doesn't make much of a difference - though the rule of thumb is that whichever works to let you exercise with the highest intensity is the "best". Higher intensity means higher energy expenditure, and higher energy expenditure means somewhat faster fat loss, but for the recreational trainee the difference is close to unnoticeable.

some of us crash during exercise unless we eat beforehand. I'm a recreational trainee, and get in much more of a workout if I'm not feeling lightheaded and weak.

I work out in the mornings. I always have a banana or a glass of juice about 25  minutes or a half hour before my workout. It seems to work for me.

A book I'm training with right now says that ideally, people should work out first thing in the morning, or 3 hours after a meal.

"We recommend you work out in the morning as soon as you wake up [...] you will burn 300% more body fat this way.  In the morning, your body doesn't have any carbohydrates to burn.  In the absence of carbohydrates, your body goes straight to the fat stores in order to get the energy necessary to do the work."

It goes on to say that the growth hormone is the highest in the mornings, and that it's one of the hormones that influences fat loss and muscle growth the most.

So they recommend not eating before working out.  This is The Body Sculpting Bible for Men.  Just started the routine today, so can't attest to the results personally yet.  But it's gotten favorable reviews on Amazon... :)

Without a small carb snack and water (pre workout), I can't make it through a moderate to high intensity 45-75 minute work out.  It just depends on your needs, I guess.   Edit: And I have been losing at a steady, healthy rate.

my boyfriends dad used to be a body builder and he told me always eat before you work out because eating speeds up your metabolism and working out speeds it up even more. so ive been eating now before. he sounds to me like he knows what hes talking about hehe

I have heard this many times before and if you can do this, it's the way to go.  I have also heard the opposite from when I was doing Weight Watchers - but IMHO I think WW is the same thing as self-flagellation and has never done me much good.

Whether you eat before or after an AM workout depends on what you want to do.  If you fuel up before you exercise (esp. quickly metabolizable things such as sugars and smaller chain starches) then it is a lot easier to initiate your AM workout, however you will also have to burn through that first before you access fat stores - and BTW if I'm not doing low carb, I notice when that transition happens bc it creates kind of a "wall" in the middle of my workout, and I think it sux a lot more than having that wall in the beginning of the workout.

If you can work out first thing before your first AM meal, then you are exercising in a semi-fasting state and you will burn fat stores first - plus and you will also have a higher burn rate for a while afterwards.

I find this one to be a myth for sure - plus I do not feel so good when I eat before work outs (cramps...gas...heavy feeling...etc)...

But I guess each to their own - there has been so much debate on this matter - but I think it really depends how you feel when you work out - do you feel more energetic with or without food?!
