What a lousy day.

Being that I live in the Atlanta area and that it was Sunday, I thought I would load up my bike and drive to the Silver Comet Trail.  For those of you that don't know what it is, it is an old rail line that has been converted to a biking/walking/paved trail that runs from Atlanta to the Alabama state line (61.5 miles).

The morning started off pretty good except my cheap 150.00 Target mountain bike is no match for those expensive road bikes.  10-12 mph is the best I can do on this bike.  About 6 miles in, I felt a massive burning pain in my leg.  I'm thinking WTH and look down and there was a wasp stinging me.  I shoo it off and that's when it really started hurting.  Lovely.  I splash some water on it from my quart of water I brought and continue on my way.

I was planning on going at least 20 miles out, preferably 25, so I could do 40-50 miles.  At MM 15, I stop to get a drink.  I open up my bike bag (the kind that goes on the handle bars.  There's like 4" of water in it because I didn't seal my container right.  Normally, this wouldn't be an issue, but my 80GB Ipod was swimming in the water.

That did it and I lost all will to go on, so I turned around and settled for 30 miles.  I managed to burn 1500 calories on the bike ride, have a welt the size of my thumb on my leg, and destroy a 300.00 Ipod.

Maybe one day if I get a better bike  that can do 15 mph and it gets cooler, I may try to take the whole 61 mile trip out and back for 122 miles.  I know I could probably do it if it wasn't for the soar bike butt.

Aww...i feel for you!!!! lol.

But well done on the bike trip. This is massive and just the will to do it is admirable!!! And you just inspired me to go out walking some more tomorrow!!!

But whats a 300.00 Ipod in front of 1500 calories burned?!!! Cool

Take care.

i'm going to go w/an optimistic viewpoint:  there was something dangerous in the next 5-10 miles of that bike route, and your guardian angel knew it.  so the angel placed the wasp, thinking that would be enough.  but the wasp was no match for your willpower!  so the angel poked a hole in your water bottle.  still to no avail!  so unfortunately, your guardian angel chose to sacrifice your ipod.

must have been some dangerous obstacle for your angel to go through all that trouble.  your health and well being are worth every penny, though.  glad to get the sense that you have some degree of a sense of humor about it.  better luck next time!

Oh, my, that is probably your quota of bad luck for quite some time! I hope the next time you venture out, it is smooth pedaling the whole way.

Good thing tomorrow is another day.   Don't let it get your down,  this type of thing happens to the best of us.  This week I went for my morning run and ended up falling because I was to distracted with Ipod trying to pick a different play list.   Ended up sprawled all over the sidewalk.  Didn't break any bones but sure got some serious road rash.  After I got up and collected myself I finished my run with a bruised ego and scraped body parts.  After work I decided I felt good enough to go and trim my small hedge in the front yard.  Everything was going well until I had a major burning sensation on both my arms.   Tunes out that I was shaking the hedge which held a very large (not exaggerating) 8 inch wasp's nest.  The bloody wasps even stung me in the cuts I got in the morning. Four stings in total.

Sorry to hear about our Ipod.  Good news is the next one will be less expensive. :)

Good luck next time.   Sounds like it would be a really beutiful trip.

I am sorry to hear about your bad ride!  My boss rides that trail every Sunday ( from Rockmart towards Atlanta).  she says her bottom still isn't used to being on that bike for that long :)

I don't usually ride a bike, but i could start.

I live in Rome, maybe in a couple of months (when my butt gets used to the bike seat) we can meet in the middle somewhere!

not that mine's as bad as yours at all but I had a similar horrible day yesterday.

I went for a 10 mile run, 6 miles into it I choke on a bug and I feel this pain in my throat as I spit it out.. turns out it was a wasp and it bit my throat and then decided it wasn't done with me yet and nested inside my sock where it decided to bite me on the ankle. Now this wouldn't be too big of a problem... if I weren't mildly allergic and my throat didn't swell up to God knows how big and cause me to throw up... I had to walk the rest of the way and I felt sick all day.

Today's run was completely f'd too because my ankle was swollen from the bite and my throat made me feel like I was attempting to breathe under water.

Oh well... life is funny sometimes

remember that bad things come in threes  so you have the wasp - the water- and the ipod. You should be good to go for awhile

Let the ipod dry out completely.  It should still be usable if you don't turn it on before it is completely dry.  Maybe you should come on down here to Peachtree City and try out the cart paths.  Although, a wasp did fly into my golf cart a couple of days ago!
