I did a 55 mile ride today - when I went to calculate out of curiousity how many calories I burned it came back with:
1963 calories for 220 minutes. Thats for averaging 14-15.9 miles, which I definitely did, I kept close track - The only times I was under the 14 was when i was going up a hill. As for the time, I know on my bike it said over 4 hours, but I'm not sure if that counted the rest stops as well, so I rounded down.
My goodness, I feel slow it seems like I should have finished that faster.. I started out about 7:50AM and got back to my vehicle at around 12:30PM - so I guess that would be right w/ the rest stops in there, I probably was actually on my bike for over 4 hours. Oh well, it was my first time doing a ride like this, and I definitely enjoyed it, so thats the important part :)
That sounds about right to me. I ride around 13-14 mph, and I burn about 720 calories. So, if I rode for three hours I would burn over 2000 calories *wow*
What a ride that must have been! I would love to ride farther and longer, but I stick to the trails around my house for now, and my current route is the longest I have found without having to cross too many streets (my son is on the back and I want to minimize danger). Also, the little one makes it about 45 minutes before he starts to whine :)
Anyway, super congrats to you!
Thank you! I usually do the same, just stick to trails around the area, but I saw this online yesterday and thought 'I can do that' so I did :) it just seems like too many calories burned, I mean, thats more than what I eat in a day!
Where did you ride? On the street?
And are you planning to eat back those calories? (Just wondering)
yeah, it was all street - and some hwy, it was marked off where to go, except for the 'independent' 30 miles which you had to follow a map.
Truthfully, I wasn't hungry at all when I did the ride, but forced myself to eat and drink at the stops and I ate lunch when I got home and just had a snack - so I'm obviously WAY under calories for the day - I don't think I've even eaten the amount that I normally do, which worries me because I know I should be eating, just loss of appetite.
Tomorrow it will probably hit me!
it"s right on i ride 50 miles wear my heart rate monitor and burn 1960
I really need to check into getting a heart rate monitor so I can track these things better! Especially now that I'm trying to get into biking more
thanks! I will keep that in mind - since it was something that I thoroughly enjoyed doing, I'm checking around for more rides like that. I just want to make sure I'm more prepared - not sure if loss of appetite is normal for this type of thing - just want to make sure I'm doing things the 'right' way -
To me, this was an incredible accomplishment. It took me about a year and a half to lose 80lbs and I've kept it off now for about 1.5 - 2 years, just thinking about the ride, no way I could have EVER done that a couple of years ago. Just shows what persistance and dedication can do :)
so today on my 45 mile ride i burned 1840, i also take trail mix since it is a good balance of fat, protein and carbs so it doesn't i don't spike and come back down, though as soon as i am home i usually run 1-2 miles slow to stretch and then go straight in the house and make protein/ fruit (banana-blueberries) for a recovery shake, when i am done i feel like i can do it again. great job on your weight loss that is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Question: How do you deal w/ the wind? It sounds like we both like to go on long rides, but today I had to cut mine short due to the wind - and I think I was probably still fatigued from the ride yesterday - but I found it miserable dealing w/ the 15-20 mph wind gusts!
wind will fatigue you fast and if you rode long and hard the day before you started out fatigued. if i do a back to back i do only half the distance or flat easy. wind though will kill ya!!! if you can try to ride with it i have found that it is easier than the cross winds, so into it one way and away from it the next. and stay lower on your bars, that should help a little, but you will be more tired.
this makes me want to go on a bike ride! with raisins! :D
thank for the advice, going to head out today again, the wind isn't supposed to be gusting as much as it was yesterday - so hopefully I should fare better! I need to pick up some 'energy' type foods at Target this morning - I always make sure to have something to take w/ me, but I'm running low! Nothing is worse than getting halfway through a ride and getting that 'ooh, I need a boost NOW' feeling.
