healthy frozen pizzas? jenny8484
  Jun 26 2008 21:20

so every friday night i am tempted with the pizza that my family orders. There it is, just sitting there smelling so good and i can't have any because i have to watch what i eat.

so does anyone have a suggestion for any good frozen pizzas that they have tried that are healthier? i know there are ones that exist from healthy choice, etc.. but wasn't sure if they are any good or good for you..

i want to indulge but not feel guilty about it!

thanks!

you can still order pizza!

you could get the thin crust (less dough = less calories), and you could order the whole wheta crust (healthier). you can also order it with no cheese, or half the cheese, tons of veggies, and no meat, or chicken instead of fattening bacon or pepperoni.

and of course, practice portion control, by maybe only have 2 smaller slices, and a big salad to go with it.

THAT'S WHAT I DO! :-D  Thin crust, light cheese....and a HUGE, no HUUUUUGE salad!  I cut one piece of pizza up and actually put in into my salad.  Then I eat some on the side!  Hmmmm, sounds like I should be eating this for dinner tonight! YAY

California Pizza Kitchen For One Thin Crust has great varieties some as low as 400 cals and really not a ton of sodium for process food.  If it's only once a week you can't beat it.  Even the thick crusts For One are @ 500 cals and very filling.

You could always make your own homemade pizza. Find a dough recipe, use some basic tomato sauce (or even just some crushed tomatoes with a little garlic and oregano) and fat free mozzarella or 2% milk lowfat cheddar.  To make it even healthier add some spinich or broccoli and grilled chicken on top, or try a veggie pizza.  Avoid fatty toppings like pepperoni or sausage. Add a bit of oregano or pepper flakes for some kick.

There are things like Stouffers Lean Cuisine or Healthy Choice pizzas, but they really arent that much bigger than a normal slice of pizza and have higher calories(in some cases) plus very high sodium (28% of the recommended daily intake). Also,

If you are really craving the "family pizza" just eat one slice (you could order it light on the cheese to help with the fat) and load up on salad (be careful of alot of dressing though) to fill you up.  Its ok to indulge a little every once and a while, it won't kill your efforts!!!

If you have a Whole Foods near you, there's a brand of mini pizzas they carry called Living Right.  They're 240 calories each, have a whole wheat crust, and are pretty tasty.  I usually make my own pizza, but these are really nice to have around when I'm too busy

I just had a quick question...sorry =P

Do people order pizza with no cheese?  I was wanting to but I didn't know if they actually do NO cheese at all...

That would be a sin.......if I were still Catholic I would challenge it to be the 11th Commandment-'Thou shalt not have pizza without Thine cheese!'.

Edit:  or cheese substitute for the Vegans!!!Cool

Sure do! I waitress at a restaurant/bar that serves pizza, and I get people ordering no cheese quite a bit..as for me if i want pizza my normal is: extra thin crust, light cheese, light ham, green peppers, red onion, tomatoes, and yellow peppers.. YUM! I could never give up pizza.. Oh and also, I have had the lean cuisine deep dish pizza.. and its actually pretty good! Not something I would consume on a daily basis but something that definitely can be used for that pizza craving.

If I HAVE to have pizza quick, I'll pick up a Lean Cuisine roasted vegetable individual pizza and serve it with some light ranch dressing. I rarely buy those anymore because I make my own (whole wheat) pita pizzas with veggies, goat cheese & tomato sauce.

Amy's frozen pizzas are not bad and you can buy a no-cheese variety. Serving size is 1/3 pizza so it's a fair amount of food for ~400 cals.

you can still order pizza with your family. Just order a small pizza suited to your dietary needs or share their pizza but only eat 1 or 2 pieces and pair it with a GIANT green salad. It works!

I am a HUGE fan of the Kashi thin crust Roasted vegetable pizza, yes the serving is 1/3 of the pizza for 250, but worse case scenario you eat the whole thing, and its 750, (you probably wont eat the whole thing) but its still a lot less than 2 slices of regular pizza.

Lean Cuisine BBQ Chicken Pizza is only 350 calories.  And it's amazingly good!
#13 huntc093 Jun 27 2008 13:15

Amy's frozen Mushroom and Olive and Amy's Margherita pizzas each have about 750 calories in the whole pizza.  A serving is 1/3 but I like to eat half the pizza for only 375 calories.  Not low in fat, but very satisfying.

I'll second the Kashi pizzas - they're amazingly good (however remember the "serving" is only a third of the pizza - you still have to control yourself).

The Lean Cuisine pizzas are reasonably good, however, I have a fondness for the South Beach Living individual pizzas.  The chicken and spinach one is very good, and they have a new spinach and mushroom made with a white sauce that is amazing (I like to sprinkle a little bit of greek or cajun seasoning on top of it before cooking and it turns out wonderful).

And as previously suggested, the best way to insure a healthy pizza is to just make it yourself.  Use pita bread, flat out wraps, or look up any number of lower calorie pizza crust recipes, and then top away with a low cal marinara, reduced fat cheese (I love goat cheese on a pizza), and loads of veggies.

thanks for all the advice all! i'll have to check a place that actually makes wheat crust cause i think that would be a lot better! i had a great "light" pizza at this place while i was on vacation in Myrtle Beach, at Ultimate California Pizza... it came with wheat crust, light cheese, and veggies.. really good! unfortunately none exist around where i live :(

try making english muffin pizzas! they aren't exactly the same as the real thing, but when you have a craving they certainly hit the spot.

Go buy a Dr. Otekers (sp) Mozarella or a Vegy pizza! There super small, super thin crust and super d-lish. I think one slice is like 150 cals or something awesome like that. But be sure your ok with the sodium content. Keep your sodium low before you eat it durring the day so you dont bloat up! (i hate that. grr to you sodium bloat.)

Other than that go make a mini Pizza by pilsbury (like a pizza pop or something) and have a huge salad! And add on tonnes of veg as well!

Mmm, pizzaa...
#18 tattooed_kitty Jun 28 2008 04:55

Yep, they sure do! I think just about any place will make a pizza w/o cheese. I have a good friend who is lactose intolerant so she orders her pizza with no cheese, just pepperoni. Now, she's a teensy little thing (4'11', 90 lbs) who doesn't have to watch her weight, hence the pepperoni, but I think it'd still be good without the cheese and with lots of veggies!

#19 deflepfan16 Jun 28 2008 04:56
Awesome!  I've always wanted to do that but haven't...I don't really know why! haha

I guess I just wanted to be sure they would be ok with it =P

I struggled with the same thing..my family would order a huge pizza with all the add-ons and i'd be going crazy. Then my mom and I started making our own whole-wheat veggie pizzas (at first I was like....ew). Bit then the first one that I made came out really really good and I love em. We use whole wheat pizza dough from the grocery store, tomatos, broccoli, peppers, and low-fat cheese (used sparingly) and they always come out so tastey!!! And they can be really fun to make!
