this has probably been asked 1000 times, but here goes..

okay, as most of you probably know, i buy plain popcorn kernels and air-pop my own popcorn using a paperbag in the microwave.

i went grocery shopping yesterday and came across eden's organic popping kernels, and the bag said it was 150 calories for 50g. but, is this for 50g of kernels, or actual popped corn? and if it's for actual popped corn, how many grams of kernels would amount to 50g popped?

It should be 50g of the unpopped kernels. So weigh out 50g of kernels and then pop it.

Wouldn't 50 grams of unpopped kernels still weigh the same 50g once popped?

i really have no idea, but i'm on summer vacation, so i don't want to do that much thinking. :|

50 g of popped kernels should equal about 50 g of unpopped, but unpopped should be easier to weigh :D So measure them out before popping, but it really shouldn't make a difference!

Easier to weigh, but popped is easier to measure.  This question reminds me of something I learned in grade school.  Which is heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of gold?  I like buying the individual serving lite (any brand).  Then I don't have to worry about weighing or measuring.  The package I'm reading right now says 3 Tablespoons unpopped or 5.5 cups popped.  This cracks me up, it also lists calories as 210 unpopped or 35 popped.  Does anyone out there eat unpopped popcornLaughing.  I will mention that this is not lite popcorn, this is regular Act II.  35 calories is doable for me.

I'm being lazy to look it up in other threads but how do you pop your popcorn in the microwave in a paper bag?  How do you keep the bag from opening up and the popcorn scattering?

No, because expanding moisture is what makes the kernels pop, and that is lost.  So the popped corn will weight slightly less than the unpopped.
