| Throw out left-over, unhealthy party foods??? | ||
| Jun 24 2008 15:18 | ||
It was my birthday on Sunday and friends came over for a little celebration. I'd asked everyone to bring something, but forgot to request that they bring something healthy, so the usual crusty white bread, pretzels, and a chocolate cake 2.5 feet long showed up. The stuff I prepared was all relatively healthy by comparison (veggies and yoghurt dip, shrimp, fruit, tortillas and salsa). Of course, there was too much food in the end, and most of it got left here, and now I'm battling not eating it. I gave a lot of the cake away, froze the rest, but those stupid pretzels and other junky stuff calls to me. Yesterday, for instance, I ate a bunch of slices of truffle sausage, salty cheese, about 4 cheese pastries for breakfast, endless pretzels and a big chunk of cake, maybe a handful of tortillas after dinner. I don't even like pretzels that much. Should I just throw everything out? I'm good at eating well when there are good things to eat in the house, but my will is not so strong when this stuff is lying around, especially in the evening. I do feel guilty about throwing out food...

i'm not a big fan of throwing out food either, but honestly, if that stuff was in my house, i'd pitch it before i ate it. |

| I would take it to work, give it to neighbors, or go to the park and leave it for the animals to eat. That way it isn't waisted and you get it out of the house! | ||

Original Post by leiann: ooooh, i like leiann's idea alot more than mine. :) that way it gets eaten and put to good use without ruining your diet. you could also take it to the nearest hospital, orphanege or homeless shelter if there's one near you. |

Thanks folks. All good ideas. Though do squirrels like pretzels? |

| Birds will eat them for sure, as will dogs or most other animals that would rome through a park! | ||

There shouldn't be a ??? at the end of that title! Get RID OF THEM! Somehow! Sooner the better! There is nothing more likely to kill a day with good intentions than to have those kinds of temptations lying around the house (as you've noticed already). As I've seen on this site before: Where would you rather the food end up? WAIST or WASTE - it's your call! |

Wait a minute...take it to work? Give it to neighbors? Aren't people here frequently complaining that people constantly bring goodies to work that are temptations they have to resist? Why would you do to that to someone else when it gets complained about so much here?
And if this food is so unhealthy, why give it to someone else to encourage them to possibly be even more unhealthy than they may already be? Now, I don't prescribe to either of the above philosophies, it just seems like one of those, 'it's ok for me to do to others, but not for others to do to me', kind of things. I'm also not saying anyone in this thread has said or done any of these things either...i'm just putting them forth because it's a little ironic to me...that's all :) My personal philosophy is, toss it. Actually, my philosophy is learn to not be controlled by it any longer by allowing yourself to eat it, but that's a process not learned in one day. I don't think giving it to animals is a good idea. It would probably make them sick. If it's not healthy for people, it's likely not healthy for animals, and somethings like chocolate can be fatal to dogs. (not sure what kind of chocolate or how much) Whatever you decide, do not let guilt over food control your decisions about food. It's just food, it has no moral value assigned to it. Eat it, don't eat it, throw it away, don't throw it away, take it to work or not...it's up to you. It belongs to you to do with what you wish. Your decision will not end world hunger nor will it save someone else from their own choices of unhealthy eating, so do what you want :) um...sorry. Didn't mean to get so deep at 9am :) |

I think if you work in a large workplace it's okay to bring food to give away. I frequently give away food and the young guys in the office gobble that stuff up. We got a bunch of 20-something clerks with lightning metabolisms running around all day. I'm very clear that it's too much for me, I can't possibly eat that amount of food or store it at my place for fear of eating it. |

Throw it out! Lest it stay even longer then desired on your hips, thighs, etc. If it really pains you to see food end up in the trash then don't look :) |
