Healthy breakfast foods?

Quote  |  Reply
Hello all :)

i wake up very early in the morning to go to school (6 oclock) so i never have time to sit and eat breakfast. By the time that i start to feel hungry its already lunchtime so i just eat what i made for lunch. I know that breakfast is very important so i would like to know some healthy easy things that i can prepare before i leave for school.

My school has breakfast in the caf, like muffins and croissants, but they are very greasy and oily. So i would to prefer not eat anything than their breakfast.

I find that cereal is one of the quickest, easiest (and healthiest fibre wise) breakfast. If you're worried about portion control just measure some cereal out and bag it in a ziplock so it's ready for the next day.

On the other hand, if you're really rushing, just grab a yoghurt, a spoon, and a banana or cereal bar. Or any piece of fruit really. If you want bread, go for brown cause complex carbs keep you fuller trust me - but I suppose a bagel with either peanut butter or cream cheese would work because the protein would keep you full. Protein like yoghurt or peanut butter or nuts always keeps me satisfied at breakfast. I don't skimp on calories either - I always find that eating 350-400 calories at breakfast keeps me ok, so I can eat around 250-300 calories at lunch and still feel okay!

You can always make your breakfast the night before, so you don't spend your morning cooking. Boil an egg, or chop up some fruit, toss it with lemon juice, and leave it in the fridge. Most breakfasts are quick to make though... whole fruit like oranges, apples, bananas, as well as cereal with milk or a multigrain bagel with peanut butter require no preparation. Like you said, breakfast is very important, and though 6 in the morning is early, I suggest getting up 15-20 minutes earlier to eat properly.

You know those Glad steam bags? You can make an egg white omelet in them using the microwave. I do it when I am in a rush. All you do is spray the bag with Pam, add your eggs, and whatever else you want in your omelet. I usually add mushrooms and cheese. It only takes a couple minutes in the microwave and you could get dressed while its cooking. There are instructions on a piece of paper that come with the bags in the box. Hope this helps though!

Hard Boiled Eggs?

When I lived in the dorms, I asked the chefs if they had any hard boiled eggs and they were able to accommodate to my healthy needs - all you need to do is ask! :)

fruit, granola bars, or cereal

:)

When i'm rushed, I grab a luna bar- they're only 180 calories, so you might want to have a piece of fruit (like an apple! :D) with it too. it fills me up :)

i love eating low sodium flavored oatmeal mmmm lol

i actually wouldnt reccomend cereal.. SOOO easy to eat way too much of and it seems to just make you (well, me at least) hungrier..
thats just my opinion tho

Luna Bars and Kashi Bars are great for quick morning meals.  They are packed with protein and fiber to keep your energy up.  Take a bar along with some fruit and milk to go and you should have a great b-fast.  I also do yogurt and granola when I'm in a rush.  Cereal is pretty quick, especially if you portion the cereal the night before and just store it in a sealed bowl.  When you get up the next morning, just add milk and some fruit.  There is also one of my fav's - Thomas' 100 calorie Whole Wheat English Muffins toasted with some RF Peanut Butter. The muffins are full of fiber and the PB gives you a great protein boost. You can even add a little sugar free jelly/jam and have PB&J for breakfast!

Something I have been doing lately is morning shake/smoothie.  I buy protein whey (vanilla is great) and throw it into the blender with some milk, ice, fruit, yogurt, and blend.  It takes 5 minutes to throw everything together, blend, and throw it in a to-go cup.

If you can't tell...I love breakfast...I could eat it every meal!  There are many things you can do to make a quick breakfast or at least prepare to take one with you.

thanks everyone for all of your help!!

i agree with the cereal thing.. i always eat WAY too much!

really great ideas! :)

I usually eat about a half pound of fruit for breakfast every morning.  Stawberries, raspberries, blue berries, melon, apples, peaches, nectarines, mangoes, grapes, etc.  I can throw it all in a pyrex dish or ziploc baggie and take it with me - easy to eat on the go.

Sometimes I will make a fruit smoothie, too - just add milk or silk to the fruits and blend.  Or just eat frozen fruits by themselves!

If I'm really in a hurry or forget to cut up the fruit beforehand, I will grab a South beach bar.  However, I rarely do that because chopping up the fruit doesn't take much time - esp. since the berries don't need it.

For early morning breakfast I like to eat cottage cheese. You can add fruit or pumpkin to it, some granola ( I add fiber one). Very filling. Sometimes I will make 2 pieces of toast, cook 1/3 cup of egg beaters and make an egg sandwich.
