On a whim, I decided to try hummus. So I bought some and have been dipping cut-up veggies in it, and I love it! But I've been trying to figure out what else I could do with it.
So what do you do with hummus?
be careful, though. some commercial hummous has added oil and the calories can add up.
I'm confused on the hummus craze. Isn't 2 tablespoons of that stuff kinda high in cals? On average I believe its 50 cals. I mean to be munching on bowls of it.. i can't see it as healthy.
I just find it funny almost. I go to this greek place, and my friends get hummus and chow down like theres no tomorrow and say it's "healthy"...
Hey, I'm eating hummus on Triscuits right now! ^^ For more things to do with hummus, try here, or any other recipe site you can find. The hummus stuffed mushrooms sounded particularly good.
Edit: star, 2 tablespoons of hummus is really filling, so I usually don't eat more than that. 50cals + 120cals (for crackers) for a snack seems ok in my book.

Hummus seems to be mostly garbanzo beans and sesame seeds. So it makes it makes it high in healthy fats and a decent source of protein. But it does have a lot of calories, so like peanut butter, eat hummus in moderation.

Thanks! good idea!
depending on how the hummus is made..some is more fattening and high in calories than others. when you eat it at a restaurant, its hard to know the calorie count. from my experience, the more smooth and creamy it is, the more tahini (the sesame paste which is a little high in calories) and more olive oil than the chunkier type. but to me, its healthier than peanut butter and has lots of fiber and nutrients..so i say eat away...maybe not a whole container in one sitting, but there are far worse things that you can snack on! i loooooove it... had some with lunch today as a matter of fact..
I la la looooooove hummus! I'm Lebanese and we always have it around. It is a little high in fat but it's really filling, so you couldn't have that much.
I ate some yesterday inside a leaf of lettuce with red onion slices in it, and a side of tomatoes ;) I sometimes eat cucumbers and use hummus as a dip. And if you've ever had tabbouli (like a parsley salad), you MUST eat them together! Not mixed together, in different bowls, but in the same meal. Haha. I have wheat pita bread and I take pieces and dip them into the hummus. Then I eat a spoonful of tabbouli, and it's fricken' HEAVEN!
Lebanese food rocks! I'd have to say hummus is the greatest ;) Have fun with it!
2T hummus + 2T salsa = high fiber/protein salad dressing
I love, love, love hummus! As for eating it from a restaurant goes, that is probably healthier than most commercial brands. If they make it in house, that is. We own a restaurant and have it on our menu. Alot of commercial brands use high fructose corn syrup. It's super easy to make yourself. Of course, I usually just have my husband bring some home from the restaurant for me :)
original hummus is not made of garbanzo beans, but chick peas. you can make it yourself, it\s really easy, and you can then decide on the amount of tahina (sesame paste) lemon and oil...
in palestine we eat it with a bunch of other meze type dishes, like baba ghanouj, tabbouleh, baqdunsiah (tahina, lemon and parsley), white goat cheese etc. All nibbled with pita bread.... lovely...actually think i\ll head off to have myself some...
You are so right when it comes to Lebanese Food. Its the best. I am Lebanese as well and well....I love eating it haha. Hommus is one of my favorite dishes.
Hummus is def a full blown food obsession of mine, so much so that I can only buy the smaller tubs b/c it would be gone within the day. When I have time I make a lower calorie version myself but during the work week it really is hard to make it.
Here is an awesome recipe with hummus!
Meddieteran Nachos:
Baked pita chips, topped with hummus, roasted red peppers, black olives, feta cheese, egg plant, tomotoes, cucumbers and chopped onions. Make this at your next party or for a function and it is a guarenteed hit! (You can also use sesame flat crisps instead of pita chips or make your own pita chips for a healthier chip)

I eat Eggplant Hummus from Trader Joe's ... 2 tablespoons = 35 calories. I have it every morning on my Perfect 10 bagel!
MOLLY
i bring my own lunch to school and i often make a sandwich that consists of 1 tbsp organic garlic hummus and 1 tbsp light garlic and herb cream cheese (i combine them together, actually), and thin slices of cucumber on whole-grain bread. it's awesome.
the hummus i buy is 70 calories for 2 tbsp but i don't binge on it, so it's not a problem for me to have in moderation.

According to the cookbooks I've read, garbanzo beans and chickpeas are the same thing, aren't they?

I stand corrected - always thought garbanzo beans were bigger and smoother... sorry

No problem, I just wanted to make sure.
The first time I had hummus it was soooo nasty. Really bad flavor from something a friend made. Stayed away for years, but I absolutely love it now! It's actually really easy to make and much more cost effective. I made some a while back and just finished it off today. Although, I highly recommend roasting the garlic first before adding it.
I got my recipe here, although I followed some of the comments to make changes to it: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Hummus-III/Detai l.aspx
I LOVE hummus. Like guacamole, it's one of those things that are addictive and hard to put down. Since I'm doing low carb, I tend to make zucchini or eggplant hummus instead of using garbanzos.
